The DiversiTech PRCF20A is a 20 microfarad, 440 volt round run capacitor for permanent split capacitor motors in air conditioning and refrigeration applications.

Condenser fan motors are among the most demanding applications for a run capacitor. The motor operates in outdoor ambient conditions, mounted directly in the airstream above a hot condenser coil, and it runs whenever the compressor runs. The associated capacitor is typically located in the same electrical compartment, where compartment temperature during a hot afternoon substantially exceeds outdoor ambient.

The result is that condenser fan capacitors are one of the most frequently replaced components in residential air conditioning. When a system fails to cool during hot weather and the compressor is running while the condenser fan is stationary, a failed fan capacitor is the first item to check, before the fan motor itself is condemned.

Running a system with a stationary condenser fan raises head pressure rapidly and will trip the high pressure switch or damage the compressor, so the unit should be shut down until the fault is corrected.
