DiversiTech Programmable Thermostat T725

The DiversiTech T725 is a programmable thermostat for residential and light commercial heating and cooling systems.

Programmable thermostats save energy by reducing conditioning when a building is unoccupied or when occupants are asleep, and the saving is real where the schedule reflects actual occupancy.

The qualification matters. Studies of programmable thermostats in practice have repeatedly found that many are never programmed, or are programmed once and then overridden permanently, at which point they deliver no saving at all. The determining factor is generally whether the occupant understands the interface.

For that reason, spending a few minutes setting up the schedule with the occupant at installation, and confirming they can override it temporarily without cancelling the programme, produces more benefit than the choice of model.

A heat pump consideration is worth noting: deep setbacks on a heat pump can cause the auxiliary electric heat to run during recovery, which costs more than the setback saved. Thermostats intended for heat pumps generally include adaptive recovery to manage this, and a thermostat without it should be set with modest setbacks.
