DiversiTech Fuse Time Delay 40 Amp 7-CRNR40

The DiversiTech 7-CRNR40 is a 40 amp time delay fuse used for overcurrent protection in circuits serving motor loads and other equipment with high inrush current.

Time delay is the essential characteristic. Motors, transformers, and compressors draw locked rotor or inrush current several times their running current for a brief period at startup. A fast-acting fuse sized to the running load would open on every start, while a fuse sized to survive inrush would be too large to protect the conductors during a sustained overload. A time delay fuse resolves this by tolerating short duration high current while still opening promptly on a genuine sustained overload or short circuit.

This behaviour allows the fuse to be sized closer to the actual running load, which provides better protection for motor windings and branch circuit conductors than an oversized fast-acting device would.

Applications include air conditioning and refrigeration condensing units, compressor circuits, motor branch circuits, fused disconnect switches at outdoor equipment, transformer primary protection, and general equipment feeders where inrush is expected.

Correct sizing follows the equipment nameplate. HVAC equipment specifies both a minimum circuit ampacity and a maximum overcurrent protective device rating; the installed fuse must not exceed the maximum specified, and conductors must be sized to the minimum circuit ampacity. Substituting a fast-acting fuse for a time delay type will generally cause nuisance opening on startup, while substituting a larger fuse compromises conductor and equipment protection.

Verify the voltage rating, physical dimensions, and class designation against the fuse being replaced and the holder or disconnect in which it is installed.
