DiversiTech Crankcase Heater 240V CH10340

The DiversiTech CH10340 is a 240 volt belt style crankcase heater used to warm compressor oil and prevent refrigerant migration during off cycles.

Refrigerant migrates toward the coldest point in a system when the compressor is off. On an outdoor unit in cold weather that point is often the compressor shell itself, and refrigerant vapour condenses there and is absorbed into the oil.

The consequence appears at the next start. Oil saturated with liquid refrigerant foams violently when pressure drops at startup, and foaming oil does not lubricate. The bearings run without an adequate film during the period the compressor most needs one, and the pump may lose its oil charge to the system entirely as the foam is carried out through the discharge.

The damage is cumulative rather than immediate. Each cold start removes a little more material, and the compressor fails eventually from wear that is attributed to age.

A crankcase heater keeps the oil warm enough that refrigerant will not condense into it, holding the compressor above the temperature of the rest of the system.

The heater must be energised whenever the compressor is off, which means it is powered continuously and not switched with the contactor. After extended power outages in cold weather, the heater should be energised for several hours before the compressor is started.
