DiversiTech Blaze Barrier Cloth 16510

The DiversiTech 16510 Blaze Barrier is a heat shield cloth used to protect surfaces and components during brazing and soldering.

Hot work near combustible material is a recognised fire risk, and brazing in an occupied building frequently takes place close to timber framing, insulation, wiring, and finished surfaces.

A heat shield cloth placed between the flame and what is behind it absorbs and reflects heat, protecting the material and containing sparks and molten filler.

The situations that call for it are common. Brazing a line set connection in a wall cavity. Working at an air handler surrounded by insulation. Making a joint close to electrical cable. Repairing pipework near a finished surface the customer will see.

The cloth protects but does not eliminate the hazard. Heat conducts through pipework to material some distance away, and fires have started well away from the point of work.

The wider hot work discipline applies. Combustible material removed or protected. A fire extinguisher present and accessible. A fire watch maintained during the work and for a period afterward, since fires from hot work commonly start after the work has finished and the crew has left. Detection isolated where required and restored afterward.

In many commercial buildings this is formalised through a hot work permit.
