Product Highlights
Description
The CPS BTLDTW is a digital torque wrench used for tightening fasteners and fittings to specified values.
Torque specification exists because both undertightening and overtightening cause failures, and judgement by feel is unreliable across different fastener sizes, materials, and thread conditions.
The application that has made torque wrenches routine in this trade is flare connections on ductless systems. Mini split manufacturers specify torque values for the flare nuts at the indoor and outdoor units, and those values are part of the installation requirements rather than a suggestion.
Undertightened flares leak, and a ductless system that loses its charge over a season usually lost it at a flare.
Overtightened flares are equally problematic. Excessive torque cracks the flare, distorts the seat, or strips the thread, and the resulting leak is often met with further tightening, which completes the damage.
Digital wrenches indicate the applied torque directly and signal when the target is reached, which removes the interpretation required with a click type wrench and allows values to be logged where documentation is required.
Torque wrenches require periodic calibration to remain accurate, and a wrench that has been dropped or used as a breaker bar should be checked.
Confirm the torque range, drive size, and fitting sizes suit the work, and follow the equipment manufacturer's specified values rather than general figures.
