Natural bristle is the specification and it carries an absolute rule: never use it with a water-based finish.

The reason is what bristle is. Natural bristle is animal hair, and hair absorbs water. Put a natural bristle brush in a waterborne stain or paint and the bristles take up water, swell, and go limp — within minutes the brush loses its shape, splays, and stops laying off properly. It does not recover. The brush is ruined and the finish is worse than a cheap synthetic would have given.

For oil-based finishes, natural bristle is the better brush and it is not close. The bristles have natural flags — split ends — that hold more material and release it evenly, and the taper of each bristle gives a brush that comes to a fine edge. Nothing synthetic quite matches it in oil.

So it is not a quality tier. It is a compatibility specification, and getting it wrong destroys the brush on the first job.

Medium stiffness suits stain: enough backbone to work material into grain, soft enough not to leave marks.
