Builder's Best Flexible Duct 4X10 FT Flex Aluminum Pipe

The Builder's Best 712911 is a 4 inch diameter by 10 foot flexible aluminum duct, commonly used for clothes dryer venting.

Dryer venting is the application where flexible duct selection has the clearest safety implication. Lint accumulates in a dryer vent, and the corrugated interior of flexible duct traps it far more readily than smooth rigid pipe. Accumulated lint restricts airflow, which extends drying times, raises energy consumption, and causes the dryer to run hotter. Dryer vent fires are a recognised and preventable hazard, and restricted or lint laden ducting is the common factor.

Material matters here specifically. Plastic and foil flexible duct is prohibited for dryer venting under most codes because it will not withstand the temperatures involved and provides no fire resistance. Aluminum flexible duct is acceptable in the applications where the code permits flexible duct at all, typically limited to a short transition length between the appliance and the rigid duct run, with a maximum length specified and concealed installation prohibited.

Best practice is to use rigid metal duct for the entire run and aluminum flexible only for the transition behind the appliance, kept as short and straight as possible, with no crushing behind the machine.

Applications include clothes dryer transition ducts and general residential exhaust connections. Confirm the local code requirements for length and installation before use.
