BASO Thermocouple 48" K17AT-48H

The BASO K17AT-48H is a 48 inch thermocouple for standing pilot gas appliances.

A thermocouple is a single junction of two dissimilar metals which, when heated, produces a small direct voltage, typically around 25 to 30 millivolts open circuit. That output is used to hold a magnetic gas safety valve open, so that the loss of the pilot flame releases the valve and shuts off the gas.

Length is the specification most often needing attention. The thermocouple must reach from its position in the pilot flame to the safety valve without strain and without excess coiled where it will be damaged. Thermocouples are supplied in a range of lengths for this reason, and 48 inches suits appliances where the valve is some distance from the pilot.

The connection at the valve carries millivolts, which means it is intolerant of poor contact. The connection should be clean and tightened snugly by hand plus a small additional turn; overtightening damages the contact surface and produces the intermittent dropout it was meant to prevent.

Testing involves measuring output with the pilot burning, both open circuit and under load.

Applications include water heaters, boilers, unit heaters, commercial cooking equipment, and standing pilot appliances.
