The Attic Tent AT-2 is an insulated attic access cover measuring 25 inches wide by 54 inches long by 7 inches high, fitted over a pull-down attic stair or access opening to seal and insulate it.

An attic access opening is one of the most significant and most overlooked thermal defects in a house. A pull-down stair assembly is typically an uninsulated wooden panel in a loosely fitted frame, sitting in the middle of a ceiling that is otherwise insulated to a high standard. The result is both a large conductive loss through the panel itself and, more importantly, a continuous air leakage path. Warm indoor air rises through the gaps around the hatch into the attic in winter, and hot attic air infiltrates the conditioned space in summer.

That air leakage carries moisture with it. In cold climates, humid indoor air moving into a cold attic condenses on the roof deck, and attic hatches are a frequent source of the frost and staining found during winter inspections.

A sealed insulated cover addresses both losses at once, and does so at a cost far below most other envelope improvements. The zippered access preserves normal use of the stair.
